Flooding causes more property damage per year than any other type of natural disaster. It is the goal of the NFIP to limit the exposure of flooding to properties that lie within a floodplain area. They have established ordinances to help in the prevention of structures' flooding in these areas. One of these ordinances is Flood proofing non-residential structures , in which the structure must be designed to be dry flood proofed. Dry Flood proofed:  A design in which the portion of the structure that is below the Base Flood Elevation is watertight.
